Water Chemistry Help
Plain-English answers to the most common hot tub problems. No jargon, no upsell.
Cloudy water is the #1 hot tub complaint. It's almost always one of three things:
1. **Low sanitizer** — If your chlorine or bromine is below 3 ppm, bacteria and organics build up and cloud the water. Shock the tub with dichlor or non-chlorine shock.
2. **High pH or alkalinity** — When pH climbs above 7.8, calcium and minerals fall out of solution and make the water look milky. Lower pH with a pH decreaser (sodium bisulfate) to 7.2–7.6.
3. **Dirty filter** — A clogged filter can't trap the fine particles. Spray-clean your filter with a hose, and soak it in filter cleaner monthly.
**Quick fix:** Test your water, balance the chemistry, shock it, and run the pump with the cover off for 30 minutes. If it's still cloudy after 24 hours, you may need a clarifier or a partial drain.
